I. Dünya Savaşı sırasında Avusturya Macaristan İmparatorluğu topraklarında bulunan Kenyérmező ve Éger (Cheb) kamplarına Rus ordusunda görev yapan ve esir düşen Tatar askerler yerleştirildi. Esir kamplarının kurulması, bilim adamlarının antropoloji, dil bilimi, folklor araştırmaları yapmaları için bir fırsattı. Doğulu milletlerin Macarlarla akrabalığının araştırılmasını ve ilişkileri sıklaştırmayı amaç edinen Macar Turan Derneği, Macar Bilimler Akademisi ile iş birliği yaptı. Bu kamplara bazı bilim adamlarını gönderildi. Bu bilim adamlarından Macar Türkolog Ignác Kúnos, 1915-1918 yılları arasında kamplara girerek folklorik malzeme topladı. İzlenimlerini Macar Bilimler Akademisine rapor etti. I. Dünya Savaşı’nda esir kamplarının tanığı durumunda olan Kúnos’un şahsında, savaşın en kanlı döneminde cephe gerisinde Türkoloji çalışmalarının sürdürülmesi, kampların araştırmacılar için bir okul görevini gördüğünü göstermektedir. Ayrıca, Macar Türkolojisinin önemini ortaya koymakta, sadece Türkoloji açısından değil diğer disiplinler açısından da önemli veriler içermektedir.
During World War I, Tatar soldiers serving in the Russian army and being imprisoned were placed in the Kenyérmező and Éger (Cheb) camps located in the territory of the Austrian Hungarian Empire. The establishment of prison camps was an opportunity for scientists to conduct anthropology, language science, folklore research. The establishment of these prisoner camps, was an opportunity to conduct anthropologic, linguistic and folkloric studies for scientists. The Hungarian Turan Association, which aims to investigate the kinship between oriental nations and Hungarians and to tighten relations, cooperated with Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Thus, a number of scientists were sent to these camps. Hungarian Turcologist Ignác Kúnos was one of them. He visited the camps between in 1915-1918 and collected folkloric data. Then he reported his observations to Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In the person of Kúnos who was a witness to the prison camps, Turcology works that are conducted behind the lines shows that the prisoner camps served the function of a school for Hungarian scholars. In addition, it emphasize the importance of Hungarian Turkology, not only in terms of Turcology, but also in terms of other disciplines.
