In view of the growing availability of dietary supplements for weight loss, it is crucial to ascertain the evidence of their effectiveness in losing weight. Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA), extracted from Garcinia Cambogia (GC) rind, is one among many other active ingredients of natural origin used as weight loss adjuvants. A review of the literature published on this topic until 2019 was carried out to verify the available scientific evidence. The PRISMA method was followed. Five hundred thirty-one articles were found, 498 of which in the Pubmed database, 17 in Lilacs and 16 in Scielo. Only 36 of these articles were included in the review, 20 of which were animal studies, 5 in vitro and 11 human clinical trials. The vast majority of animal studies reported statistically significant differences in weight, energy intake and fat mass. In most in vitro studies, the antiadipogenic effect of GC was proven. In turn, the vast majority of human clinical trials have failed to prove the effectiveness of GC in weight loss, fat reduction, energy intake, among other indicators. These results attest the importance of further human studies in order to clarify the association of CG with weight control.
