To compare the ultrasound, cytological and histopathological findings of thyroid nodules undergone fine needle aspiration biopsy and to determine the efficiency of fine needle aspiration biopsy.METHODS: The records of 1420 patients diagnosed with a thyroid nodule and undergone fine needle aspiration biopsy between January 1 and June 30, 2010 were evaluated retrospectively. The relation and consistency among the ultrasound, cytological and histopathological findings were analyzed.RESULTS: The study included 1254 (88.3%) female and 166 (11.7%) male patients. The mean age of the patients was 49.48 years and 10.5% of the patients were operated. The mean nodule sizes of the patients managed with or without surgery were 25.5±14.20 mm and 17.62±9.69 mm, respectively.
