Abstract:

One of the most important authors in contemporary Turkish literature is Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar. He has written momentous works in multiple genres such as poems, stories, novels, essays and criticisms. While Tanpınar is primarily known for his novels and contributions to literary criticism, some of his poems have been overlooked and have not been the subject of in-depth analysis. In this study, the author's poem titled “Threshold” on which the poet has worked for twenty years was examined by considering his entire works and art aesthetics. His long-term study of the poem “Threshold” is related to the exclusive value he attributes to it, reflecting his fastidious attitude.This study aims to analyze the poem in which feelings and thoughts are expressed with religi-ous, mythological elements, images, symbols and allegories in the face of phenomena such as time, existence and death. Thus, it was aimed to shed light on the poet’s thoughts, who views poetry as a form of silence rather than a means of direct expression and wants poetry to be a closed world. In addition, the structure of the poem and the vocabulary used within the poem were explained in parallel with the theme and ideas.
