“Bizi Hristiyanlığa davet eden birisine nasıl cevap veririz?” Böyle bir merakın mahsulü olan bu çalışmada, Endülüslü bir Maliki fakihi olan Ebu’l-Velîd el-Bâcî’nin (ö. 474/1081) Sarakusta Hükümdarını Hristiyanlığa davet eden bir rahibe gönderdiği reddiye ele alınmıştır. Rahibin mektubu, Hristiyanlıktaki Hz. İsa algısını ve o dönem Hristiyanlarının İslamiyet’e ve Hz. Muhammed’e (a.s.m.) bakışını ortaya koyması bakımından belge niteliğindedir. Bâcî’nin cevabı ise böyle bir davete karşılık verildiğinde nasıl bir usul, dil ve üslup kullanılabileceğine dair bir fikir vermektedir. Görüldüğü kadarıyla rahip, Hz. İsa’nın ulûhiyet sıfatını haiz olduğunu düşünmektedir. Bu doğrultuda davet ettiği kişiyi böyle bir inanca çağırmaktadır. Bâcî ise mektubunda, rahibin bahsettiği konular çerçevesinde kalarak cevap vermiş ve Hz. İsa’ya isnat edilen ulûhiyet iftirasını çürütmeye odaklanmıştır. Girişte dikkat çeken bir nezaket içinde dil kullanan Bâcî’nin mektubun ilerleyen sayfalarında muhatabının akli yetisini hedef alarak onu tezyif eden yaklaşım sergilediği görülmektedir. Mektubun son sayfalarına kadar keskin bir dille Hz. İsa’nın ilahlığına dair tezleri çürütmeye odaklanan Bâcî, Hz. Muhammed (a.s.m.), Kur’ân ve İslamiyet’in hakkaniyetine dair delilleri ortaya koymayı ise sona bırakmıştır. Bundan anlaşılan odur ki müellif savunmacı konumunda kalmak yerine muarazacı bir yöntem izlemeyi uygun görmüştür.
