Abstract:

Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of diabetes education and short message reminders applied to individuals with type 2 diabetes who are registered with a primary care institution and use oral antidiabetics. Material and Methods: This study, which was carried out using an interventional design with pretest posttest control group, was carried out with 101 individuals with type 2 diabetes (n=50) and control (n=51) in a family health center between November 2017 and April 2019. A diabetes education program with two sessions and five modules was applied to the intervention group consisting of 6-8 people, and then reminder messages about diabetes management were sent from the mobile phone twice a week until the sixth month. No intervention was applied to the control group. “Diabetes Patient Follow-up Form” and “Multidimensional Diabetes Questionnaire” were used to collect data. Evaluations of all participants were repeated at baseline, third and sixth months. Results: It was determined that diabetes education and SMS reminders applied to individuals with type 2 diabetes were effective in disease management, adherence to treatment, and creating some lifestyle changes related to diabetes control (p<0.05). Conclusion: It is recommended to implement diabetes education programs and follow up with reminder SMS in disease management, follow-up and support, ensuring treatment adherence, creating lifestyle changes and raising awareness of individuals with diabetes.
