Özet:

Izmir, the most important port city of Eastern Mediterranean, and adjoining territories caused a significant conflict between Italy and Greece at the sharing plans between the victorious states after the First World War. Ultimately, on May 15, 1919, Izmir was occupied by Greece, which was the triumphant part of this conflict against Italy. The occupation of Izmir and adjoining territories by the Greek forces was an important spark in terms of the organization of the resistance movements that emerged in the face of the occupations by the Allied Powers which started in Anatolia at that time. The occupation of İzmir has been handled in the light of mostly domestic sources, with some exceptions, in the literature. Studies dealing with the occupation of İzmir by using American sources generally focus on a certain dimension or process of the occupation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the occupation of Izmir, which constitutes an important cornerstone of the history of the Republic of Turkey, by the Greek forces in a holistic way in the light of the documents in the American archives. In the study, the perspectives of the actors responsible for the formation and implementation of the American foreign policy will be analyzed comparatively for the period between the decision, implementation and the end of the occupation.
