Abstract:

Ebubekir Hâzım Tepeyran (b.1864) was one of the most important authors and statesmen who were born and grown in Niğde. It is accepted that the distinguished literary work of him is a novel titled Küçük Paşa (Little Pasha). This novel was published in 1910 and in Turkish literature it was among the first novels about village life. In the novel the events take place in a village resided in Middle Anatolia. Many researchers claim that it is a village of Niğde. Tepeyran narrates some of his childhood memories related to Niğde in his book Hatıralar (Memoirs). In Küçük Paşa he manages to narrate the conditions of a middle Anatolian village and villagers’ misery in a realistic view. Through the novel the reader can find the features of the villagers’ dialect spoken in that region. Besides his childhood memoirs, Tepeyran benefited from his experiences in different places where he was a governing officer of the State.
