Abstract:

ABSTRACT This paper analyses the reasons behind the extraordinary development in France of a long-standing, highly productive and well-organized Hispanism. Unlike other European Hispanisms, it attributed considerable importance to the study of Spanish civilization in addition to literature and language, and has also taken an interest in contemporary history. The idea of civilization has traditionally been interpreted as “internal” history, which embraces a wide variety of social and cultural phenomena. This trend has encouraged the practice of an original sociocultural history on the part of Hispanists with a literary background, who outnumber historians. Recently, however, there has been a growing influence of cultural studies of Anglo Saxon origins that have already colonized other modern languages departments in French universities. In this context, a debate has arisen within the corporation vis-à-its disciplinary structure. Some authors warn against the fragmentation of their discipline and its evolution towards a type of cultural studies removed from its own tradition.
