Abstract:

Çünkü araştırma kapsamında tespit edilen haberlerin %32,5’i Türkiye’nin savaş kararından öncesine, %67,5’i de sonrasına aittir.

Abstract:

The Korean War is the first close battle across the world in the Cold War era and is the first war, which Turkey sends their troops abroad. Turkey wanted to present any anti-Soviet and pro-American attitude and to guarantee NATO membership through sending troops to fight for South Korea in the Korean War. On the other hand, the ruling Democratic party took the decision to join the war without any debate in the Turkish Grand National Assembly. That’s to say, such an important decision was taken in such a short while by a limited number of people. Accordingly, the Korean War is a very important issue in respect of both domestic and foreign politics. The aim of this study is to examine the presentation way of the Korean War and Turkey's decision on joining the war in national press. The study is focused on the period between 25th June 1950, when the War began, and 31st August 1950 as covering the process following Turkey's decision to join into the War. The samples are composed of national newspapers named as Night, Republic, Hürriyet, Nationalism, New Istanbul, New Sabah and Victory. The headlines and front-page news were examined in line with the objectives of this study. Content analysis method was applied by using both quantified and qualified indicators. One of the most important findings of this study is that the Korean War and Turkey’s decision to join the war took considerably wider space in the front pages of these newspapers. The subjects of 602 front-page news and 246 headlines were about the Korean War. Another important result was that, the news about the war took more space following Turkey’s decision on joining into the war because, 32,5% of the identified news were belonging to the period before Turkey’s war decision and 67, 5% of them were belonging to the period afterwards.
