The Effect of Communication Skills Training of Nursing Students and Its Effect on Their Virtual and Interpersonal Relationship

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of communication skills training of nursing students and its effect on their virtual and interpersonal relationship. Material and Method: The study pre-testpost-test in single group quasi experimental design was carried out at the Nursing Department of a university in April-June 2016. Instruments used in this study were Personal Information Form issued in accordance with the literature reviewed, Interpersonal Relationship Style Scale, and Virtual Environment Loneliness Scale. The study was carried out with 71 voluntaries 1st class undergraduates of nursing department. Data collection instruments were applied to these undergraduates (pretest), and a 10-week communication skills training was given to them using methods such as presentations, role play, and debate. Post-test was applied one week after the 10th session. Descriptive statistics and Paired Sample T-Test were used in the assessment of the findings, and level of significance was found out to be p< 0.05. Results: It was determined that 78.9% of the subjects were female, 78.9% of them had close friends, and that undergraduates spent approximately 4.52±3.25 hours daily on virtual platforms. It was found out that there was a significant difference between Interpersonal Relationship Style Scale nourishing relationship style sub-dimension pre-test (30.28±4.92) and post-test (34.89±6.88) scores (p<0.05); however, it was found out that there was no significant difference between pre-test and (15.04±8.72) and post-test (12.91±5.34) scores of frustrating relationship style sub-dimension (p>0.05). It was also determined that there was a significant difference between the pre-test (26.71±6.13) and post-test (24.63±6.47) scores of Virtual Environment Loneliness Scale socializing sub-dimension, and between pre-test (17.47±3.81) and post-test (16.28±4.37) scores of loneliness sub-dimension (p<0.05); however, it was determined that there was no significant difference between pre-test (14.78±6.17) and post-test (15.16± 6.93) scores of sharing sub-dimension (p>0.05). Conclusion: It was found out that communication skills training improved nourishing relation styles of undergraduates, decreased levels of virtual socializing and virtual loneliness.
