Abstract:

The concepts of commodity and commodification that emerged with industrialization are one of the prominent issues of modern times. Industrialization, which paves the way for mass production and consumption, brings with it an urban culture. The concept of commodification, which dominates human life with urbanization, reaches different dimensions from social and individual perspectives. The perceptions of the individual and society show a development in the focus of various commodities. The capitalist economic system reveals a conceptualization such as commodification that will be used in all areas of life. There are various studies on the reflection of this concept in literature as in many other fields. In literary works, the concept in question has been handled with different aspects. Oğuz Atay is one of the writers who draw attention to this issue while describing the experiences of individuals in urban life. In the introduction of this study, the concept of commodity and commodification was emphasized and its historical development was followed. At the same time, the reflection of this concept in literature was explained. In the other parts of the study, different dimensions of the commodification phenomenon in Oğuz Atay's stories were revealed. As a result of a thematic analysis, the projections of commodification in the aforementioned stories were explained. The thematic analysis of the stories was made with a text-centered approach.
