Purpose: Recreation is defined as the optional and voluntary activities that are carried out individually or in a team and that give satisfaction to the individuals, by eliminating the adverse effects of the industrial society. Thus, recreation becomes the part of dynamic lifestyle and culture widespread in the modern society. As a result of this integration of recreational activities with the social life, a new leadership need as the recreational leadership- arises for guiding the individuals who carry out such recreational activities in their leisure time. In this paper, the concepts of recreation and recreational leadership are examined based on a comprehensive literature review, and it is aimed to reveal the effects of transformational and transactional leadership behaviors, which the coaches’ exhibit, on the participation levels of the citizens in recreationalactivities Methodology: the data gathered from 237 participants who use the gymnasiums of Bahçelievler Municipality are submitted to factor, reliability, correlation and regression analyses through SPSS 13.0 demo version. Findings and Results: The results contribute to the related literature by demonstrating the effects of transactional leadership behaviors of the coaches on the participation levels of the citizens in recreational activities
