Communication, a mass phenomenon of the twentieth century, has also entered the domain of sociology and created a broad social and historical perspective on mass communication, the processes that make this communication possible and its impact. Sociology of communication basically refers to a holistic perspective that considers all social, cultural and historical processes involved in communication. In studies placed under this field, the phenomenon of communication is often considered as an important condition of social continuity. The discipline of sociology has an active role in understanding and interpreting communication in depth as well as utilizing communication as a means to shed light on the social, economic, political and cultural structure and reality of society. This study aims to portray a general panorama of the discussions of communication within the field of sociology with a particular focus on its treatment under different sociological perspectives in Turkey since the twentieth century. The case studies presented in this paper represent a summary of a quite broad field of literature. It is also clear that the number of works to be included under the heading of the sociology of communication has increased over the years in Turkey.
