Abstract:

There are numerous studies in cinema have focused on the representation of both women and men, in a space where gender relations are reproduced. These studies primarily aim to explain the unequal position of women when compared to men. Within a patriarchal structure, women are often relegated to secondary roles, and their roles are determined according to patriarchal codes. The film "Şendul Şaban" (directed by Kartal Tibet, 1985) serves as an example in our society of how the roles of femininity and masculinity are shaped and defined beyond patriarchal codes. The film challenges traditional gender roles by reversing the roles of femininity and masculinity, encouraging reflection on gender-based division of labor and societal expectations placed on women. The research is designed qualitatively, with the theoretical framework primarily focusing on gender and division of labor. Women's representations in Turkish cinema during the 1980s were examined in line with the purpose of this study. By analyzing the roles of women and men in the film "Şendul Şaban," the representation of femininity and masculinity was examined in the context of gender-based division of labor. The findings suggest that the narrative in the film strengthen and reproduces patriarchal domination.
