İhsan Süreyya Sırma 1944 yılında Siirt’in Pervari İlçesinde doğdu. İlkokulu kendi ilçesinde, ortaokulu ve liseyi Siirt’te tamamladı. 1966 yılında Ankara İlahiyat Fakültesinden mezun olduktan sonra doktora yapmak üzere Paris’e gitti. 1973 yılında doktor unvanını aldı. 1974 yılında Atatürk Üniversitesinde Asistan doktor olarak göreve başladı. Aynı üniversitede 1980 yılında doçent ve 1989 yılında ise profesör oldu. İhsan Süreyya Sırma İslam Tarihi üzerine yoğunlaştı ve bu konuda 35 kitap ve çok sayıda makale yazdı ve çeşitli sempozyumlarda bildiri sundu. İhsan Süreyya Sırma’nın tarihçiliğini, tarihi metodolojisini ve tarihi olayları nasıl yorumladığını ve tarihçinin objektif olup olamayacağı gibi konulara onun penceresinden bakmaya çalıştık. İhsan Süreyya Sırma, yazdığı eserlerinde hep olayları ana kaynaklara ve belgelere dayandırarak ele almakta ve her olayın yorumunu yaparken okuyucuya da ayrı bir ufuk açmakta olduğunu gördük. O’na göre tarih, günümüze kadar cereyan etmiş tüm olayların, bütün boyutlarıyla irdelenmesi, soruşturulması ve değerlendirilmesi gereken bir konudur.İhsan Süreyya Sırmaya göre tarih, ancak zaman olgusuyla bilinir. Başka bir ifadeyle zaman, tarihi hadiselerin adeta bir arenasıdır. İbn Haldun Tarihi,’’ aziz bir yolu olan ve sayısız faydalar içeren, onurlu ve gayesi olan bir bilimdir. O bize, gelip geçen kavimlerin hal ve ahlaklarını, Peygamberlerin siretlerini, hükümdarları ve idare ettikleri devletlerin durumunu ve takip etmiş oldukları siyaseti öğretir ki, bunlardan iyi olanını kendimize örnek alalım; dinimiz ve dünyamız için kullanalım.’’ tanımlamaktadır.
He was born in 1944 in the Pervari district of Siirt. He completed his primary school in his own district, high school and high school in Siirt. In 1966, after graduating from the Faculty of Theology in Ankara, he went to Paris to do a doctorate. In 1973 he received the doctor’s title. In 1974 he began his career as an assistant doctor at the University of Atatürk. He became a professor at the same university in 1980 and a professor in 1989. The history of Ibn Haldun is a science that has a holy path and has countless benefits, honourful and aimed. He teaches us the state and morality of the people who came and passed, the rites of the prophets, the state of the rulers and the states they govern, and the politics they follow, so that we may take the best of them as an example for ourselves and use it for our religion and our world. and identify.

İhsan Süreyya Sırma does not look at history as a observer. In his works, he always handles the events based on the main sources and documents, makes comments on each event and tries to open a horizon to the reader. According to his point to history, all events that have taken place to the present day, should be examined, investigated and evaluated in all dimensions. According to İhsan Süreyya Sırma, history is known only for the phenomenon of time. In other words, time is an arena of the historical events. Ibn Khaldun defines history as "a science that has a precious way, contains numerous benefits, and that is honorable and purposeful. It teaches us the situations and morals of the societies that have come and gone, the biographies of the prophets, the rulers, the situations of the states they govern and the politics they follow due to the fact that we take examples for ourselves and use it for our religion and world."
