Abstract:

The article is devoted to one of the aspects of the scientific heritage of the outstanding Kumyk educator, public figure, Arabist scientist and poet Abusupyan Akayev (1870-1931). His creative and scientific activities greatly contributed to the rise of cultural level and national identity of Kumyks and other peoples of Dagestan.. He also has a special role in the movement of reformation (jadidism) of Islam in Dagestan, the development of new metode (usul-i-jadid) of education. In the article for the first time in the history of Turkic linguistics in the pre-Soviet era some issues of sociolinguistics were raised. In particular, they were connected with the place and role of Turkic languages in the language situation of the North Caucasus and Dagestan, and, as Abusupyan Akayev rightly believed, in the education system it is necessary to give preference not to Arabic, but to native Kumyk language. He also first considered issues of literary language theory and linguoculturrology in an interpretation close to the modern scientific tradition.
