“Tarih yapmak isteyen tarihi unutmalıdır” diye buyurur Fransız şarkiyatçısı Ernest Renan. Renan, hayatının son yıllarında yalnızca bilim ve akla inandığını yazmıştır. İnsanın problemlerini nihai aşamada bilim çözecektir. Pozitivizmin hâkim düşünce geleneği olduğu yıllarda sosyal bilimciler, toplumu ve insanı ele alırken, onu anlamaya çalışmak yerine onun nesnel (!) yasalarını bulmaya gayret ettiler. Tarihin, toplumun ve insan davranışının yasalarını bulmak hem geleceği tahmin etmeye hem de onu kontrol etmeye yarayacaktı. Geleceği kontrol edenler insan davranışını ve toplumların akibetini de kontrol edebilirdi. Tarih, yani geçmiş anlama ya da yorumlamadan uzak şekilde ideolojilere göre yeniden inşa ediliyordu. Renan’ın buyurduğu gibi, tarih, geçmiş unutuluyordu. Unutulmalıydı çünkü tarih, kutsal (Hıristiyan, yahut Hristiyan Yahudi gelenek, İslamî, Budist..) tarihti kefaret, çile ve sınanmanın tarihiydi. Tarih insanın yarasıydı ve bütün kötülüklerin anası. Tarih insanın idare ettiği bir şey değil, onun başına gelendi. Halbuki gelecek aydınlık ve yönetilebilir olmalıydı, geleceğe dönük iyimserlik ve bir yeryüzü cennetine inanç, yani tarih felsefeleri Turgot’dan Condorcet, Comte ve Marx’a bütün ilerlemeci Aydınlanma düşünürlerinin müşterek noktası, fikirlerinin nihai kriteriydi. Onlara göre ontoloji ve tarih birbirinden tamamen ayrılabilirdi. Tarihin istikameti tahmin ve tayin edilebilirdi.
“The one who wants to make history must forget the history,” says French singer Ernest Renan. Renan wrote that in his last years of life he believed only in science and reason. Human problems will be solved by science in the final stage. In the years where positivism is the dominant thinking tradition, social scientists deal with society and man, instead of trying to understand it, its objective (!) They tried to find their laws. Finding the laws of history, society, and human behavior would help both predict and control the future. Those who control the future could also control human behavior and the end of societies. History, that is, was rebuilt by ideologies, far from past understanding or interpretation. As Renan said, history, the past, was forgotten. It should be forgotten because history was the sacred history (Christian, or Christian Jewish tradition, Islamic, Buddhist, etc.); the history of kefaret, chili and trial. History was the wound of man and the mother of all evils. History is not something managed by man, it has happened to him. While the future should be bright and managed, the optimism towards the future and the belief in a earth’s paradise, that is, the historical philosophers from Turgot to Condorcet, Comte and Marx, were the point of departure of all the progressive Illumination thinkers, the final criterion of their ideas. On the other hand, Ontology and history could be completely separate. History could be predicted and determined.
