Belirli bir tanımı olmayan, sürekli tartışılan ve özünde geniş anlamlar taşıyan kültür kavramı, kültürel çalışmaların geniş bir alanını kapsamaktadır. Bu tartışmaların temelinde kitle kültürü, kültür endüstrisi ve popüler kültür kavramları farklı ekollerin kültür incelemelerine yaklaşımını ortaya koymuştur. Frankfurt Okulu’nda kitle kültürü olarak ele alınan kavram, ilk olarak Aydınlanmanın Diyalektiği başlıklı çalışmada Adorno ve Holkheimer tarafından kültür endüstrisi olarak farklı bir perspektifle yeniden ele alınır. Adorno’ya kadar süre gelen kültür tartışmalarının odağında kültürel öğelerin metalaşması, seri üretimi ve iletişim araçları ile büyük kitlelere ulaştırılmasının “geleneksel kültür” ve “halk kültürü” olarak ifade edilen kültürlerin yok edildiği, yoksunlaştırıldığı fikirleri bulunur. Birmingham Okulu ya da İngiliz Kültürel Çalışmaları Ekolü kültür kavramını ele alışıyla, diğer ekollerden ayrılır. Ekol, kültür kavramını popüler kültür biçimde ele alarak ona bir tarihsel dönemden diğerine içerik bakımından değişen kültürel biçimler ve pratikle anlamı yüklemiştir. Bu biçimler ve pratikler alanında, alt ve karşıt kültürel değerleri karışımlar içinde karşılıklı birbirlerinin içine girerler. Popüler müzik, popüler kültürün en önemli görünümlerinden biridir. Adorno popüler müziğin, kapitalist endüstriyel standartlaştırılmış üretim zincirinin, herhangi bir mekanik ürünü kadar standartlaştırıldığını iddia ettiği gibi endüstrileşme sonucu ortaya çıkan standartlaşma sürecinde “parçaların birbirlerinin yerini alabilmelerini (parça değiştirilebilirliğini) ve sahte bireyselleşmeyi” eleştirir. Yani herhangi iki ya da daha fazla popüler müzik şarkısının farklı bölümleri birbirleriyle yer değiştirildiği zaman bile bir bütünlük oluşturabilir nitelikte, “yer değiştirebilir parçalar” işlevindedir. Standartlaştırılmış popüler müziği, müziğin bir bölümündeki detayın yalnızca parçanın bütününe bağlı olarak anlam kazandığı ve popüler müzikte olduğu şekliyle standartlaştırmanın olmadığı “ciddi müzik”ten ayırmanın mümkün olduğunu iddia eder. Bu çerçevede çalışmada öncelikli olarak kitle kültüründen kültür endüstrisine kadar devam eden kültür tartışmalarına, Adorno’nun popüler müzik eleştirisine, daha sonra popüler kültür çalışmalarında önemli bir yeri olan Birmingham Okulu ya da İngiliz Kültürel Çalışmaları Ekolünün kültür kavramını ele alışına ve son olarak ise hegemonya kavramına değinilecektir.
The concept of culture, which has no specific definition, is constantly discussed and has broad meanings in its essence, covers a wide range of cultural studies. Based on these discussions, the concepts of mass culture, the cultural industry and popular culture have revealed the approach of different columns to cultural studies. The concept considered as mass culture at the Frankfurt School is first re-interpreted by Adorno and Holkheimer in the study on the Dialogy of Illumination with a different perspective as the cultural industry. The focus of cultural discussions that came to Adorno is the idea of the metalization of cultural elements, the mass production and the communication of the masses by means of the "traditional culture" and the "people's culture" which is expressed as the cultures are destroyed and deprived. The Birmingham School or the English Ecole of Cultural Studies is separated from the other Ecole by addressing the concept of culture. Ecol, by addressing the concept of culture in a popular cultural form, has put it on the meaning of cultural forms and practices that change from one historical period to another in terms of content. In the field of these forms and practices, sub- and counter-cultural values enter each other in mixture. Popular music is one of the most important aspects of popular culture. As Adorno claims that popular music, the capitalist industrial standardized production chain, is standardized as any mechanical product, in the standardization process that arises as a result of industrialization, he criticises "the possibility that parts can replace each other (the variability of parts) and false individualization." Thus, any two or more different parts of the popular music songs can create a integrity, even when they are replaced with each other, in the character of "place-changing pieces". Standardized popular music claims that it is possible to distinguish the detail in a part of music from the "serious music" that it only makes sense depending on the whole of the piece and that it is not standardized as it is in popular music. In this framework, the study will focus primarily on cultural discussions from the mass culture to the cultural industry, the criticism of Adorno’s popular music, the discussion of the cultural concept of the Birmingham School or the English Ecole of Cultural Studies, which is a major role in the popular culture studies, and, finally, the concept of hegemony.

On the basis of these discussions, the concepts of mass culture, culture industry and popular culture revealed the approaches of different schools to cultural studies. The concept, which was considered as mass culture in the Frankfurt School, was first reconsidered as culture industry by Adorno and Holkheimer in the study titled Dialectic of Enlightenment. At the center of the cultural debates, which lasted until Adorno, are the ideas that the commodification of cultural items, their mass production and their delivery to large masses by means of communication, the cultures expressed as "traditional culture" and "folk culture" are destroyed and deprived. The Birmingham School or the British School of Cultural Studies, which provided new horizons in popular culture studies, differs from other schools with its approach to the concept of culture. The school has taken the concept of culture in the form of popular culture and attributed meaning to it with cultural forms and practices that change in terms of content from one historical period to the next. In the field of these forms and practices, sub- and counter-cultural values intertwine. Popular music is one of the most important aspects of popular culture. Adorno criticizes "the interchangeability of parts and pseudo individualization" in the standardization process that emerged as a result of industrialization. He claims that popular music is as standardized as any mechanical product of the capitalist industrial standardized production chain. In other words, even when different parts of any two or more popular music songs are interchanged, they have the function of "replaceable parts", and can form a whole. Adorno claims that it is possible to distinguish standardized popular music from "serious music", where the detail in a part of the music makes sense only in relation to the whole part, and there is no standardization as in popular music. In this context, the present study firstly reviewed the cultural debates from mass culture to the culture industry and the Birmingham School or British Cultural Studies School's handling of the concept of culture, which has an important place in popular culture studies, then popular music debates and, finally, the concept of hegemony.
