OBJECTIVE: This study, aiming at investigating the effects of work stres on job satisfaction, is a descriptive and causal relation. METHODS: TThe research has been conducted on 365 midwives, who had accepted to participate in the study of the 517 midwives working in 34 health care centers (Family Health Center), two mother and child care and family planning centers in Antalya and in Antalya Training and Research Hospital and Atatürk State Hospital. The participation level for the study is 70.5%.The definitive properties of midwives has been collected with ‘Perceived Work Stress Scale’ and ‘Minnesota Satisfaction Questionairre’ in addition to a survey form developed as a result of the literature prepared by the researcher.The data obtained from the study has been evaluated by encoding with in computer software package and finding percentage distributions; in addition to this by conducting average, standard deviation, one-way variance and Pearson Correlation and Pearson Chi-Square and Cronbach's alpha RESULTS: 38.1% of the midwives according to the work stress scores, comprises the largest group of midwives as Group E Work Stress, “the stress level with high exitance, with more responsibility but appeal to the employee. This level may increase productivity by some aspects that compels the employee, but may threaten health by other aspects.” The internal satisfaction average of the midwives has been found 3.36±0.58 an average internal satisfaction level, their external satisfaction average has been found 2.72±0.49 below the average, and their general satisfaction average has been found 3.10±0.32 near to a neutral average. There is a statistically meaningful of p<0.01 between work stress and job satisfaction scores. There is a negative correlation between the work stress and job satisfaction of midwives. It is seen that there are statistically meaningful relations between the internal work stress and internal satisfaction (r=-0.429, p<0.01), external work stress and external satisfaction (r=-0.413, p<0.01), and general satisfaction (r=-0.465, p<0.01). CONCLUSION: As a conclusion, job satisfaction decreases as work stress increases, or job satisfaction increases as work stress decreases.
