Abstract:

Stefan Zweig tells the uncanny struggle of a lonely woman isolated from society because of her physical appearance in his anti-war story Wondrak. The protagonist Ruzena Sedlak fights with the authority to prevent his son from serving in the army during the First World War. She thinks that the official records that keep the people's information since their birth are the state's most powerful weapons. Once an individual is registered into these transcripts, they cannot be free anymore. This study aims to make a sociological interpretation of war from the personal history of a woman who is mocked as a ‘skull’ by society because of being noseless. Erving Goffman’s stigma concept, Michel Foucault’s power and subject relationship, the effects of rumors in public, and the visibility of violence to a woman in public space are mainly examined in this study.
