İlk çağ Yunan filozofları arasında hiç şüphesiz en tartışmalı isimlerden biri olan Ksenophanes, antropomorfik tanrı tasavvurlarına getirdiği eleştirililerle tanınmıştır. Ksenophanes, tanrıların doğasını araştıran böylelikle tanrı kavramının araştırmalarını felsefenin alanına sokan ilk düşünür olarak karşımıza çıkmıştır. Araştırmalarında felsefi ve teolojik düşüncelerin bir araya gelmesi Antik Yunan’dan günümüze birçok düşünürün ilgisini çekmiştir. Ksenophanes’in ilgi çeken bu eleştirileri bir takım soruları beraberinde getirmiştir. Ksenophanes’in tanrıların insani özelliklerine yönelik eleştirileri tanrıların çokluğuna yönelik bir eleştiriyi de içermekte midir? Bu soruya bağlı olarak Ksenophanes nasıl bir tanrı anlayışı ya da tanrılar düzeni ortaya koymuştur? Kimi düşünürler Ksenophanes’in tektanrıcı bir tanrı fikri sunduğunu düşünürken kimi düşünürler panteist olduğunu ileri sürmüşlerdir. Kimi düşünürler de Ksenophanes’in hala çoktanrılı düşünceyi devam ettirdiğini iddia etmişlerdir. Xenophanes, undoubtedly one of the most controversial of the early Greek philosophers, is known primarily for his radical criticism of the anthropomorphistic notions of the gods. Xenophanes was the first philosopher to investigate the nature of the gods and thus introduced reflection on the concept of God to the realm of philosophy. This connection, of philosophical and theological thoughts, attracted the attention of scholars from Ancient Greece, as well as those of the present day. Xenophanes’ compelling criticism of the traditional gods raises several questions. Does his criticism of the human characteristics of the gods involve a criticism of their pluralism? What is Xenophanes’ own understanding of God or the gods? Some scholars argue that Xenophanes presents a monotheistic notion of God while others claim that he was a pantheist. Others still maintain he upholds a polytheistic view. This article discusses Xenophanes’ understanding of the gods in the light of the question of whether he was a monotheist, polytheist, or a pantheist.
