The purpose of this paper is to investigate the performance of Turkish life insurance market. The efficiency of Turkish life insurance firms was evaluated by using the data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) which is a nonparametric frontier method. Computed total efficiency (TE), technical efficiency (PTE) and scale efficiency (SE) estimates from 1998 to 2002 were utilized. Thus panel consisted of a total of 107 observations. Tobit model was used to investigate the determinants of efficiency. This analysis aimed to explain the variation in calculated efficiencies in terms of set of explanatory variables, such as number of firm, premium, economic crisis, earthquake.
