Abstract:

Valproic acid is a drug commonly used in diseases such as epilepsy, emotional disorders, migraine prevention. Due to the narrow therapeutic range and the wide range of indications for use, valproic acid is often encompassed with poisoning. Here a phenomenon of valproic acid poisoning has been and treated with hemodialysis. A 14-year-old girl with no known illness was admitted to the child’s intensive care unit due to taking valproic acid for suicide purposes. Three hours after the patient’s drug was taken, the serum valproic acid level was 347.8 μg/mL. The high anion in the blood gas took into account the high metabolic acidosis and laktate. Since metabolic acidose indicates bad forecast, the patient was given hemodialysis without developing organ insufficiency findings. After four hours of hemodialysis, the patient's sleeping tendency disappeared, the serum valproic acid levels decreased and reached normal reference intervals. The patient's metabolic acidosis improved, the laktate height disappeared. The patient who corrected the findings after treatment was dismissed by error. In cases of high doses of valproic acid poisoning, hemodialysis treatment can be successful. In this case, high doses of valproic acid poisoning in patients with organ insufficiency findings have been shown that hemodialysis that is done without developing may be effective.
