Abstract:

Each city has its own culture, sociology, history and nature. This is the identity that distinguishes the city from the other. There is a close relationship between the city identity and the settlement names. Understanding the street, street and settlement names of a place is also to understand the relationship between the identity or personality of that settlement unit. In this study, the names of the streets and streets of Kilis, located on the transition route between Gaziantep and Halep, two important settlements throughout history, were subjected to a toponymic analysis. In this study, certain criteria were taken into account when classifying the street and street names in the city of Kilis. These criteria include the names of the streets and streets related to the Republic, the names of the religious and national streets and streets, the names of the streets and streets related to local and national persons, the names of the streets and streets related to the important wars that have occurred in this region in history, etc. The results of this analysis found that the names of religious, local and national persons in Kilis have an important role in calling the streets and streets. The dominant political process in Kilis has found important toponymic findings about the Republican period and the achievements of this period. Another important conclusion that is noted in the study is that in the church in general, the names of the republic, of the wars and of national important persons are given to the streets, while the names of the local important persons, of the natural and cultural landscape, of the places of worship and of the urban architecture are given to the streets.
