Abstract:

Perge, one of the ancient city of Pamphylia, is located in Antalya Plain, 12 km inland from the coast, between the Aksu and Düden streams. Although the settlement history of the city started in the Late Neolithic-Chalcolithic period, not enough information could be obtained about the pre-Hellenistic period. Perge has gained regional importance since the Hellenistic period and has become one of the prominent cities of Pamphylia. It experienced its flourishing period during the Roman period. According to ancient sources, the navigability of Aksu Stream, passes near the city, enabled trading to gain importance and the city to become rich, even though it was a settlement far from the coast. In order to reveal the shoreline changes occurred in the Holocene in the Aksu Plain, where the Ancient City of Perge is located, and to determine the location of the Ancient Perge Port, studies were carried out in previous years using the vibracore drilling method. In previous studies it is stated that the sea had reached up to Boztepe during the Holocene. In this study, it was aimed to reveal the Holocene coastline changes around the Ancient City of Perge with new drilling data. For this purpose, 5 new vibracore drillings were made in Aksu Plain. New drilling data revealed that rising sea waters during the transgression in the Mid-Holocene had reached up approximately 2 km further north from Boztepe.
