Venous thrombembolism is a major health problem that begins with deep venous thrombosis and results in pulmonary embolism. Deep vein thrombosis is a major health problem that is at risk of death for hospitalized patients and especially postoperative patients and is considered to be the cause of preventable deaths. As with all protective efforts, preventing the formation of thrombus is one of the most important stages in venous tromboembolism. One of the major risk factors that cause the formation of venous tromboembolism is surgery or other invasive procedures. The assessment and determination of the patient’s risk of venous tromboembolism has an important role in the pre-operative period. In patients who undergo surgery without proper venous thromboembolism prevention, 25-60% of patients experience deep venous thrombosis. In the prevention of deep vein thrombosis and complications often asymptomatic, nurses who constantly serve in patient care take important roles and responsibilities. In the pre-operative period, nurses play an active role in monitoring the efforts taken to assess and prevent patients from the risk of venous thrombembolism. This article was prepared in order to create a source of information on the assessment and prevention of the risk of venous tromboembolism in surgical patients in accordance with the latest guidelines for nurses.
