Health care is a highly complex system. This complexity leads to medical errors. Patient safety is one of the basic principles of health services. Preventing or decreasing patient damage caused by health service-related errors are defined as Patient Safety. During health care, patients are seriously damaged by medical errors and may even lose their lives. One of the areas where medical errors occur frequently is obstetrics. Pregnant women are at high risk for medical errors both for themselves and for the baby. The purpose of patient safety in obstetrics is to ensure that the mother and the baby receive safe care in the prenatal, postnatal and postpartum periods and to reduce maternal-infant mortality rates. Standardization of quality care in prenatal, postnatal and postpartum period is very important in terms of patient safety. In addition, it is thought that midwives will be able to provide safe and quality care by identifying the risks related to mother and newborn health, taking measures against risks, reporting the unwanted events occurring. In this review, it is aimed to share the information about patient safety issues and responsibilities of midwives at the birth and postpartum period.
