Diabetes and exercise The incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus increases with the decrease in physical activity and increase in obesity. Exercise decreases plasma glucose, HbA1C, basal and postprandial insulin levels; increases insulin sensitivity and improves lipid profile. It also slows down progress into type 2 diabetes mellitus those with impaired glucose tolerance. At least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week is recommended to diabetic patients. Patients should be encouraged for activity for 30-60 minutes of exercises 3-4 times a week. J. Exp. Clin. Med., 2012; 29:S16-S22
With a decrease in physical activity and an increase in obesity, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes also increases. Exercise reduces plasma glucose and HbA1C, reduces basal and postprandical insulin levels, increases insulin sensitivity, improves lipid profile. In addition, it slows the progress to obvious diabetes in those with deteriorated glucose tolerance. Diabetic patients are recommended 150 minutes of average aerobic exercise a week. Patients should be encouraged to activity 3-4 times a week, with 30-60 minutes of exercise.
