Abstract: For almost three centuries starting with the conquest of Kefe, and while Europeans viewed the Crimean Khanete as the “right hand” of the Ottoman Empire, these two states had always been culturally and politically in harmony with each other. Although the majority of the Crimean Khanate’s populace in its anthropogeography were Muslims, many subjects of different religious and ethnic backgrounds had lived in peace for long in the borders of the Khanate. This coherence concurrently led to the formation of the region’s idiosyncratic characteristic as the borderline of the Ottoman Empire. The geographical position of the Crimea arosed the interest of many travellers, merchants, missionaries and diplomats. In addition to the political attraction of the geopolitical position of Crimea, French political concern for its commertial affairs in the Levant and the hinterland as reflected in the documents produced by the diplomats, itinerants, merchants and Catholic missionaries sent to Crimea by France point out to their indisputable importance. This study aimed to examine in particular how Jesuites present in the Crimean Khanate from the first half of the 18th century in time became institutionalised and the role they played in the formation of political communication between France and the Crimean Khanate. Keywords: Crimean Khanete, France, Jesuits missionaries, consuls.
