Montenegrin people rebelled so many times against Ottoman Empire with the help of European states in 19th century. After the Balkan Crisis that broke out in 1875, allying with Serbia in trust of Russia, they declared a war against Ottoman Empire in 2 July 1876. Russia that supported Montenegro also started to fight against the Ottoman Empire in 1877. As a result, the Ottoman army was defeated by both Montenegrin and Russian forces. Edirne Armistice and peace record that was a basis to peace treaty were signed between Ottoman Empire and Russia on 31 January 1878. Ottoman Empire recognized Montenegro’s independence as well as Romania and Serbia. Moreover, San Stefano Treaty was signed by taking peace record as a basis in 3 March 1878. However; this treaty gave many rights to Russia and that situation disturbed other European states, that’s why Berlin Treaty was signed instead of San Stefano Treaty in 13 July 1878 with the attempts of European powers. In Berlin Treaty where the independence of Montenegro was reaffirmed, Montenegro’s border was narrowed according to San Stefano Treaty.
