Abstract:

This article aims to reveal the solutions proposed by Spinoza on freedom of expression. One of the main topics of Spinoza’s political philosophy is freedom of expression. Even his work, Theological Political Review, is a defender of freedom of expression. The realistic attitude of Spinoza, a thinker who has also faced the issue of freedom of expression hard in his private life, and the solutions proposed by him are quite remarkable. The issue of freedom of expression is a universal problem that we face in almost every age and society. Although this problem is manifested in different ways in each society due to age or cultural differences, the basis of the problem is almost always the same. In this context, the answer must be sought: How far is the limit of freedom of expression extended in the best state? The solutions proposed by Spinoza on the issue of freedom of expression and responses to this question may have its practical effects today. The purpose of the state and the cause of its existence is freedom. In the event that the freedom of expression disappears, the cause of the state’s existence disappears. Therefore, the right to freedom of expression should not be obstructed unless it is misused by the person in a way that is aimed at threatening the security of the state and the unity of society.
