Dünya nüfusunun artmasından dolayı tüketimin artması ve bu tüketimi karşılayabilecek olan işletmelerin faaliyetlerini yerine getirirken doğayı tahrip etmeleri, sürdürülebilirlik konusunu önemli kılmıştır. İşletme faaliyetleri ve tüketimden kaynaklanan çevre kirliliği sürdürülebilirliği tehlike altına koymaktadır. Yaklaşan tehlikenin farkında olan ülkeler çevrenin korunması amacıyla önlem almaya başlamışlardır. Tehlikeyi ortadan kaldırmak veya etkisini en aza indirmek için konferanslar düzenleyip protokol imzalamışlardır. Alınan önlemler ve yapılan konferanslar ile sürdürülebilirlik kavramı ortaya çıkmıştır. Çok boyutlu olan sürdürülebilirlik kavramı, son yıllarda üzerinde en çok çalışılan konulardan birisi olmuştur. Çalışmanın amacı, sürdürülebilirlik ile işletme maliyeti arasındaki ilişkiyi ortaya koymaktır. Bu doğrultuda sürdürülebilirlik kavramı, sürdürülebilirliğin unsurları, sürdürülebilirlik raporlama, sürdürülebilirliğin maliyeti ve bu maliyetin muhasebeleştirilmesi ele alınmıştır. İşletme paydaşları son yıllarda işletmeden ekonomik faaliyetler ile birlikte işletmenin çevresel ve sosyal faaliyetlerini de barındıran sürdürülebilirlik raporunu talep etmektedirler. Bu bakımdan tahrip edilen doğal kaynakların yerine konulması ve korunması amacıyla işletmeler ek maliyetlere katlanmak durumunda kalmaktadır. İşletmelerin ayakta kalabilmeleri için paydaşlarının beklentilerine cevap vermeleri gerekmektedir. Ayrıca sürdürülebilirlik maliyetine katlanan işletmelerin prestij kazandığı söylenilebilir.

The increase in consumption due to the world’s population growth and the destruction of nature by the businesses, which meet this consumption have made the issue of sustainability important. Environmental pollution caused by business activities and consumption puts sustainability in danger. Countries that are aware of the approaching danger have started to take measures to protect the environment. They held conferences and signed protocols to eliminate the danger or minimize its impact. The concept of sustainability emerged with the measures taken and the conferences held. The concept of sustainability, which is multidimensional, has been one of the most studied subjects in recent years. The aim of the study is to reveal the relationship between sustainability and operating cost. The concept of sustainability, the elements of sustainability, sustainability reporting, the cost of sustainability and accounting for this cost are discussed in this respect. In recent years, business stakeholders have started to request the sustainability report, which includes the environmental and social activities of the businesses, along with the economic activities of them. In this respect, businesses have to bear additional costs in order to replace and protect the destroyed natural resources. In order for businesses to survive, they must respond to the expectations of their stakeholders. In addition, it can be said that businesses that bear the cost of sustainability gain prestige.
