Abstract:

Büyükada, which is the largest of the Istanbul Islands in terms of surface area, has a context that is separated from the rest of Istanbul both physically and sociologically with its history, architecture and culture. This relatively isolated sociological structure of Büyükada and its historical places have affected the silhouette of the island. Büyükada has a very rich cultural heritage with its different architectural styles, cosmopolitan life, biological diversity, and island-specific traditions and customs from the Eastern Romans to the present. Despite this rich cultural heritage, the data in these different contexts of Büyükada cannot reach its potential today. It is important to increase the awareness of the memory and cultural heritage of the island. For this reason, in this study, the spatial counterparts of the historical and cultural heritage of Büyükada are handled through memory spaces and it is aimed to experience the spaces. For this purpose, a holistic cultural route proposal has been developed that focuses on memory spaces. In order to determine the memory places to be included in the cultural route, 224 buildings were analyzed and listed from different sources, and 75 of them were included in the route by evaluating the listed buildings according to the determined criteria. With the cultural route proposal, awareness of the places of memory in the memory of the city and the citizens was emphasized and its sustainability was aimed.
