Özet:

Objective: To determine the effect of arterial and venous diameters on maturation of wrist arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) and to determine when these fistulas can be used after creation. Material and Methods: Between August 1- November 31, 2009, 42 patient in whom wrist AVF had been created fort he first time were included the study. Physical examination was performed and an upper extremity Doppler ultrasound (USG) was performed in all patients for arterial and venous systems. The diameters of the radial artery cephalic vein were recorded before and after tour- niquet applicaiton. Then a snuffbox or wrist AVF was created. Preferably 4 weeks after creation, control USG evaluation was done and the patients were divided into two groups as <500 ml/min and >500 ml/min according to thier cephalic ven flow rates. Results: There were 17 females and 25 males and the mean age was 60.3±12.4 years. Twenty two patients were diabetic and 20 were hyper- tensive. Three patients died because of uremic complications. In 3 patients (7 %), the fistulae thrombosed due to hypotension (%7). Fistula flow was higher in patients who had a larger initia- ton cephalic vein diameter. Conclusion: Wrist AVFs have higher patency rates and can mature in short time. Initiation cephalic vein diameter is predictive on fistula maturation. Doppler USG can detect the useful extremity and the vessels.
