Abstract:

In the study, it was aimed to determine the knowledge, metaphor, and delusions of primary school students about grammar. The case study approach, one of the qualitative research methods, was adopted. The study group consisted of 250 primary school 4th-grade students living in Istanbul. A semi-structured interview form consisting of 21 questions was used as a data collection tool. MaxQDA 2020 qualitative data analysis program was used to analyze the data and content analysis was performed. The responses given to the interview form were analyzed according to “I know”, “I don't know, I want to learn”, “I don't know, I don't want to learn”. According to the results of the research, the students answered that “I know”: “noun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction, tenses, meaning in the word (synonyms, antonyms, e.t.c.) words in terms of structure (simple-derived-compound), sentences according to the place of the verb (regular-inverted), sentences according to the meaning (positive-negative- question) and punctuation marks.” And also the students answered that “I don't know, I want to learn”: “Pronoun, preposition, the person suffix in the verb, elements of the sentence (object, subject, verb), root word-suffix, gerundial, phonetic situations, and expression errors.” In this context, it is recommended to consider the ability of students to apply grammar rules compared to grammar tests and written expression studies.
