Abstract:

It is known that 92% of Turkey’s geography is within earthquake areas, while 95% of its population is under earthquake risk. According to the 2013 population census, 22.7% of the Turkish population lives in rural areas and villages, and this percentage is about 50% in the Van region. From this important point, the 2011 Van earthquakes after the area mostly consisting of accumulation structures related settlements to the Erciş district have been examined and the damage detection work in the rural area has been evaluated. Identifying the damages the existing accumulation structures have been categorized in four categories: unskilled, low-skilled, medium-skilled and seriously damaged/destroyed. For each settlement unit, a separate percentage of the total number of damaged structures of the types of damages occurring in the structures has been extracted for each damaging condition. These have been achieved a numerical result by matching the recommended damage rates. A scale is created in which the value of violence can be identified according to the damage conditions and the result is identified according to this scale. Thus, in this study, a more quantitative alternative structural violence pattern for rural settlements was created by measuring only accumulating structural damage.
