Althaea officinalis L. (Malvaceae), commonly known as “hatmi”, is native in our country. The roots “Althaeae radix” and the leaves “Althaeae folium” of the plants are registered as herbal drugs in European Pharmacopoeia. Regarding to the high mucilage amounts, the roots and leaves of the plants are used as antitussive agents. The aim of this study is to determine the accordance of the samples sold in local herb markets to the European Pharmacopoeia monographs. Therefore, samples are bought from Adana and Ankara. Samples are analyzed by morphologic and microscobic means as well as TLC, foreign matter, loss on drying, total ash, ash insoluable in hydrochloric acid and swelling index. According to results of morphological analysis of the samples purchased from local herb markets, it was determined that the samples was not contained root and leaves of the officinal plant in Pharmacopeia. Moreover, it was determined that these samples belonged to Alcea genus and were not A. officinalis. For this reason, the analysis indicated the roots and leaves of A. officinalis in Pharmacopoeia were not subjected to samples from the local herb market, were subjected to standard specimen of A. officinalis. According to our results, the root and leaves of A. officinalis samples collected from nature were in good accordance with the Pharmacopeia analyses except swelling index. The samples collected from nature were found to contain less mucilage than the value stated in European Pharmacopeia 7.3. As a result it was determined that the samples sold in local herb markets in the name of “hatmi” belong to officinal species and drug, contain a lot of organic and inorganic matter, for this reason local herb market samples were not match as a scientific drug and they were a threat for public health
