Özet:

Streszczenie Traktat medyczny "O chorobach melancholicznych" autorstwa André Du Laurens oraz summa encyklopedyczna "Anatomia Melancholii" Roberta Burtona uchodzą w późnorenesansowej literaturze za dwa podstawowe kompendia na temat melancholii. O ile w dziele Du Laurens odnajdujemy klasyczne wyobrażenie tej choroby, wraz z jej diagnostyką, symptomami oraz metodami leczenia, o tyle dzieło Burtona, znacznie subtelniej podchodzi do tej choroby, wyodrębniając i dokładnie analizując zjawisko melancholii religijnej. Angielski teolog bada tę ostatnią w oparciu o obyczaje i zachowania chrześcijan, krytykując ich zabobony i przemoc niesioną w imię wiary. — Historiografia (Simon Goulart), tragedia (François de Chantelouve), nowela (Małgorzata z Nawarry) oraz poezja liryczna (Małgorzata z Nawarry i Jean-Baptiste Chassignet) stanowią doskonały zbiór, pozwalający prześledzić paradoksy, w jakie francuscy twórcy wikłali się, chcąc dać wyraz swej religijności. Podczas gdy propaganda polityczna tworzy diametralnie sprzeczne obrazy admirała Coligny’ego, to ścieżki prowadzące do wiary w wymiarze indywidualnym ukazują paradoksalne zjawiska, gdzie melancholia jako rozczarowanie życiem wybija się na pierwszy plan.  The medical treaty "Des maladies melancholiques" by André Du Laurens and Robert Burton’s encyclopaedic work "The Anatomy of Melancholy" are considered to be two basic compendia of melancholy in the sixteenth century literature. While in the work of Du Laurens the classic idea of the disease, diagnosis, symptoms and treatments can be found, the work of Burton, much more subtle approaches to this disease, highlighting and thoroughly analyzing the phenomenon of religious melancholy. The english theologian explores it, basing on customs and manners of the Christians, criticizing their superstition and violence carried in the name of faith. — Historiography (Simon Goulart), tragedy (François de Chantelouve), short stories (Marguerite de Navarre) and lyric poetry (Marguerite de Navarre and Jean-Baptiste Chassignet) make a perfect corpus to investigate how the authors express a feeling of melancholy: in Marguerite de Navarre work it is nothing else like love disease, while in the sonnets of Chassignet it is identified with the unfortunate human fate. Writers in the sixteenth-century drew from discourse of melancholy, to deplore the political situation or to express the anxiety caused by the encounter with God. While political propaganda creates a diametrically opposed images of Admiral Coligny, the path leading to the belief in the individual dimension appears as a paradoxical phenomenon where melancholy as a disappointment of life is quite obvious.
