Özet:

The language-culture relationship falls into the field of study of cultural linguistics. The boundaries of cultural linguistics, which is a new research field, have not been drawn exactly. There is not much information about the elements and method to be taken as a basis in the examinations. The main purpose of cultural linguistics, the foundations of which were laid in the XX century by Humbolt, who stated that the national spirit and worldview were reflected in the language, is to reveal the appearance of culture in language. The units shown in this study are linguistic units that are important for the society in question. The simultaneous method is used to examine the language units determined in cultural linguistics. In this study, unlike other studies, the subject was approached with a diachronic method. While dealing with the words “mom" and “mother”, it has been tried to be looked at from a wide perspective, from etymology to meaning, from its place in the vocabulary to its use in dialects. The study has determined the meaning, origin, mythological, religious importance of these two words, their appearance in historical and contemporary Turkish dialects, their use in dialects, idioms and proverbs, derived, compound words and phrases made with the words “mom and mother”. Thus, attention has been drawn to the richness of expression in Turkish and the importance given to the “motherhood” of women in Turkish culture. At the end of the study, it was observed that the “mom” had a certain “value” in terms of culture, and it was concluded that the two words had different conceptual fields.
