In this study, numerical distribution and staining aspects of mast cells in renal tissues of rats exposed to formaldehyde were light microscopicallyexamined. During 15-day assay period, ratswere intraperitoneally applied every otherday with 9 mg/g doses of formaldehydediluted with physiological saline solution at37%. After aliquots of tissues collected for microscopic examinations had been identi ed and washed at 10% formol, they wereadopted routine histological tissue evaluationprocedures and blocked by para n. Byobtaining 10 each serial sections every other30μ at 5μ-thickness from prepared blocks, 0,5% toluidin blue and alcian blue/safranin O (AB/SO) were stained by combined stainingmethod. To identify numerical distribution of mast cells at serial sections, cells were counted by 100 square ocular micrometer. That the mast cells in renal did not morphologically change after formaldehyde exposure was observed at the examinations. Metachromatic and less quantities of orthochromatic stained mast cells with toluidin blue were observed at renal tissues of rats that are both healthy and exposed to formaldehyde. It is identified that the number of mast cells has an increase in renal tissue exposed to formaldehyde in proportion to normal renal tissue of rat. More often red SO(+) mast cells and less often pale-stained blue AB(+) mast cells were founded in control and experimental groups.
