Coğrafi açıdan Akdeniz’de son derece önemli bir noktada bulunan Girit adası pek çok medeniyete ev sahipliği yapmış ve bu yolla zengin tarihi ve kültürel geçmişe sahip olmuştur. Adanın Osmanlı Devleti tarafından fethedilmesiyle 17. yüzyılda oluşan Müslüman nüfus, 1923 yılında Türk- Yunan Nüfus Mübadelesi sonucunda adadan ayrılmak zorunda kalmıştır. Bu çalışmada ada yönetiminin ilhak kararı aldığı 1908 yılından Yunanistan’a bağlandığı 1913 yılına kadar geçen süreçte Müslüman cemaatin kimlik bilincinin şekillenmesi ve demografik açıdan yaşadığı değişim üzerinde durulacaktır. Adanın siyasi tarihi açısından önemli bir yol ayrımını ifade eden 1908-1913 arası dönem, ada Müslümanlarının da kimlikliklerini korumak için daha yoğun mücadele etmek zorunda kaldıkları bir süreç olmuştur. Eş zamanlı olarak Osmanlı Devleti’nde yaşanan siyasal gelişmeler ve meşrutiyetin yeniden ilanı Girit Müslümanları açısından da önemli sonuçlar yaratmıştır. Jön Türklerle gelişen Türk milliyetçiliği Girit Müslümanları arasında hızla gelişmiş kuşkusuz azınlık oldukları bu süreçte kimlikleri, daha da sahiplendikleri ve korumaya çalıştıkları bir biçim almıştır. Çalışmanın odaklandığı 1908-1913 arası dönem Girit Müslümanları açısından büyük ölçüde 1913 sonrası dönemin temelini oluşturmaktadır
Geographically, the island of Crete, which is located at a very important point in the Mediterranean, has hosted many civilizations and thus has a rich historical and cultural past. The Muslim population which had been formed after the conquest of the island by the Ottoman Empire in the 17th century had to leave the island as a result of the Turkish-Greek Population Exchange in 1923. In this study, it is focused on the shaping of the identity consciousness of the community and the demographic change experienced in the process from 1908, when the island administration took the decision of annexation, to 1913, when it was annexed to Greece. The period between 1908 and 1913, which represents an important crossroads in terms of the political history of the island, was a period in which the Muslims of the island had to struggle more intensely to protect their identity. Simultaneously, the political developments in the Ottoman Empire and the re-declaration of constitutionalism had important consequences for the Muslims of Crete. Turkish nationalism, which improved with the Young Turks, developed rapidly among the Muslims of Crete, and in this process, where they were undoubtedly a minority, their identities took a form that they further embraced and tried to protect. The period between 1908 and 1913, on which the study focuses, largely forms the basis of the post-1913 period for Cretan Muslims.
