Abstract:

Abstract In the present work a reflection is carried out on the potentialities offered by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the study of Settlement Systems, specifically in rural areas. This theme has traditionally been addressed in regional and urban planning studies; The fundamental difference is associated with the proposal to undertake these investigations with innovative tools (GIS) that facilitate obtaining results efficiently. The implementation process of these systems is based on a theoretical analysis of the fundamental problem, the ways and means of studying it, mainly the need to use quantitative measures that bring specialists closer to a knowledge of the phenomenon. The aforementioned aspects are previously addressed and summarized so that as a whole they can form the fundamental theoretical assumptions for the design and implementation of a Geographic Information System that allows the study and analysis of the spatial structure of the Settlement Systems. populations in rural areas.
