Abstract:

The aim of this study is to adapt the English Speaking Anxiety Scale (Second Language) developed by Woodrow (2006). For the linguistic equivalent of the scale, English and Turkish forms are applied online to a group of students who are learning English at the middle level at the University of Ege's Higher School of Foreign Languages (n=54) with a interval of 15 days. In this application a positive and meaningful relationship was achieved (.882, p<.01), a two-factor structure was achieved, which describes 64.14% of the total variance, by applying to 778 students who learn English at different levels at the same university. The correlation analysis for the measurement-related validity of the measurement has established meaningful relationships. The scale (n=455) was reapplicated to a different group of middle-level English students in the same school to perform the verifying factor analysis. The original scale’s two-factor structure has been verified, and the achieved conformity index has been shown to be within the perfect conformity limits. The reliability ratings for the measurements in this study were calculated as .83, while the size of speech anxiety within the class was calculated as .85. The results of the analysis show that the scale can be used in Turkey.
