Bir Okyanus ülkesi olan Japonya, Çin ve Kore’nin doğusunda, Rusya’nın güney doğusunda yer alan kuzeyde Okhotsk Denizi’nden, güneyde Doğu Çin Denizi’ne kadar uzanan uzun, ince bir adalar ülkesidir. Japonlar ülkelerini Japonya’da kullanılan üç çeşit yazı karakterlerinden en eskisi ve biri olan kanji yazısındaki yazılış şekline göre “Nippon” veya “Nihon” olarak adlandırmışlardır. Bu kelimeler kabaca “doğan güneşin toprağı” ya da düzgünce “güneş” ve “kök” “Güneş Ülkesi” olarak çevrilebilir. Çinceden türemiş olan bu terimin farklı bir çeşidi Batı’da Japonya’yı ifade etmek için kullanılmıştır. Japonya için Güneş, millî bir simge haline gelmiştir. Hatta “Doğan Güneş” ibare olarak Japon bayrağında yer almıştır. 13. yüzyılda Çin’de Moğol hükümdarlarının yanında bulunan gezgin Marco Polo, bu ismi Venediklilerin hiçbir zaman ziyaret etmediği deniz aşırı bir ülke için kullandıklarını ifade etmiştir. Ardından Marco Polo’nun Avrupa’daki bir çevirisinde, Nippon veya Nihon isimlerini bir yazıcı, çevirisinde Şipango veya Zipango’ya benzetmiş bu isimlendirmeler zamanla değişerek “Japonya” şeklinde Latinceye girmiştir.
