This study aimed to compare pain, functional status and quality of life of the patients with knee and hip osteoarthritis and to asses the affect of the variables. Study was performed at Göztepe Education and Training Hospital Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation outpatient clinic. Patients whose diagnoses were knee osteoarthritis (n=90) and hip osteoarthritis (n=60) according to the ACR criteria were included in the study. Their demographic datas were noted. Radiologic grading was assessed by using Kellgren and Lawrence criteria. Outcome measures included VAS, WOMAC, Harris Hip Score and SF-36. There were no statistically significant difference between the groups according to mean ages, sex distrubition, education level, occupation groups and body mass indexes. According to the pain, physical function and quality of life, women with hip osteoarthritis were more affected negatively then men. Physical function, physical role, general health subscales of the QOL were affected in women with knee osteoarthritis. Although obese knee osteoarthritis patients functional status and physical fuction subscale of QOL found negatively affected, there were no affect of obesity on pain, function and quality of life in hip osteoarthritis patients. It was detected that exercises had a positive affect on pain scores, functional status and QOL of hip osteoarthritis patients; and on pain scores and QOL of knee osteoarthritis patients. Radiologic grade was statistically correlated with functional status and QOL in both of the groups. We didn’t detect any statisticaly significant difference between hip osteoarthritis and knee osteoarthritis groups according to pain, functional status and QOL.
