Abstract:

Purpose: Compare silicone oil (SY) and C3F8 used as tamponade in macular hole surgery in terms of anatomical success and increased vision accuracy. Tools and Methods: 39 of the 39 patients who were subjected to the pars plan vitrektomy surgery due to macular hole were included in our retrospective, comparative study. Two groups were created placed in SY or C3F8 as a tampon in the eye. In the early post-chirurgical period and in the final control, the rate of closure and increase in vision accuracy of the macular hole was anatomically measured and assessed whether there was a significant difference between the two groups. Comparison between the two groups (SY and C3F8) was made using Man-Whitney U test and square test. P values under 0.05 were considered statistically meaningful. Results: In the SY group the anatomical closure rate of the early-period macula hole was 94.4 percent (17/18), while in the C3F8 group this ratio was 95.2 percent (20/21) (p=0.54).After the second surgery, the anatomical closure rate of the macula hole was 94.4 percent (17/18), in the C3F8 group 100% (21/21) (p=0.29).The difference between the visual accuracy in the last control and the pre-visual accuracy of PPV was 0.74±0.39 logMAR in the SY group, while in the C3F8 group 0.72±0.35 logMAR was determined (p=0.91). There was no statistically meaningful difference between the two groups for all comparisons (p>0.05 ).
