The Turkmen, who have been living in the Syrian geography for over a thousand years, are a community that has left deep-rooted traces in the historical process. The Turkmen, who mostly live in and around Aleppo, have undergone a great transformation with modern times. The collapse of the Ottomans and the social turmoil during the turbulent process of the emergence of modern Syria left marked marks in the formation of all political and social structures after independence. The distinguishing feature of these traces is observed in the relations between all ethnic and sectarian elements forming the Syrian society. The Turkmen community, customized under the French mandate, did not look very charming for the nationalist Arab rulings in Syria during the post-1946 nation building process. However, this approach, from the fact that the Turkmens whose existence was over a thousand years did not see the positive role they could play in the construction of the new state, maintained its existence as much as the recent period. Turkmen are affected by the Turkey-Syria relations, brought to live in a country filled with political turmoil while trying to cope with adversity, it gave the fight to protect the assets. Today this great cultural heritage is on the verge of a new era with the Arab Spring.
