Lazarus Güldü (Lazarus Laughed), Türkiye’de oldukça iyi bilinen Amerikalı oyun yazarlarından Eugene O’Neill’ın neredeyse hiç bilinmeyen oyunlarından birisidir. Eugene O’Neill’ın bu oyunu, şiddetin çeşitli türlerinin bir sonucu olarak modern Amerikan bireyinin yaşadığı toplumsal ikilemi, savaş sonrası bunalımı, kapitalist ekonomik sistemin yarattığı travmayı ve neticelerinde yaşadığı dini, ahlaki ve kültürel çöküşü hicvederek konuyu yaşadığı dönemin yaklaşık bin dokuz yüz sene öncesine konumlandırır. Halkın en güçlü duygusu olan dini, alegoriler üzerinden konuya yayarak iktidar eleştirisini yapar. İktidarla ve birey üzerinde uyguladığı şiddetle diğer oyunlarında olmadığı kadar dalga geçerek aslında iktidar ve şiddet kelimelerinin içini boşaltmayı amaçlar. Oyunun sonunda ise güncel ve geçici çözümler yerine umutsuz olmakla beraber evrensel çözüm önerileri verir. Bireyin özgürleştirilmesi gerektiğini, var olan sistemin kördüğümlüğünü dile getiren oyun, şiddetin en uç noktası olan ölümle sonuçlansa bile insanın içindeki iyiliğin yok edilemeyeceğini göstermesi bakımından önemlidir. Lazarus Güldü adlı oyunda şiddet, adeta zamansal ve mekânsal sınırlarından çıkarak yüzyıllar öncesinden gelen ve modern bireyin üzerine çöken bir hayalet gibidir. Kısaca kuramsal art alan olarak başta Eric Fromm’unkiler olmak üzere yeni tarihçi ve psikoanalitik kuramların kullanılacağı bu çalışmada O’Neill’ın antik Yunan tiyatro geleneği üzerinden modern bireyin şiddet kavramıyla ilişkilenme biçimlerini nasıl ortaya koyduğu betimsel yöntemle araştırılarak, tiyatronun Amerikan bireyi ve iktidarın arasındaki ilişkiler ağını sosyolojik olarak nasıl yansıttığı tartışılacaktır.
Lazarus Laughed (Lazarus Laughed) is one of the almost unknown games of Eugene O'Neill, a well-known American game writer in Turkey. This game of Eugene O'Neill poses the subject about a thousand and nine hundred years before the period in which the modern American individual, as a result of various kinds of violence, lived in the social duality, the post-war depression, the trauma created by the capitalist economic system and the religious, moral and cultural collapse in which he lived. Religion, which has a popular feeling, makes power criticism by spreading the subject through the allegories. In fact, by laughing with power and the violentness he applies to the individual as not in other games, he intends to empty the words of power and violence. At the end of the game, he gives suggestions of universal solutions instead of timely and temporary solutions. The game that expresses that the individual must be liberated, the blindness of the existing system, is important in the sense that it shows that the goodness within the person cannot be destroyed even if it ends with the death, which is the point of violence. In the game Lazarus Smile, violence is like a ghost coming centuries ago and falling on the modern individual, out of the quite time and spatial boundaries. As a short theoretical field of art, the new historical and psychoanalysis theories, including Eric Fromm's, will be used in this study, exploring the way O'Neill revealed the forms of modern individual association with the concept of violence through the ancient Greek theatre tradition, and discussing how the theatre sociologically reflects the network of relations between the American individual and the power.
