Individuals with alexithymia are unable to identify their own feelings; they also have trouble identifying the emotional state of others. This study examined the relationship of alexithymia with empathy and emotional intelligence. A sample of 350 university students (175 males, 168 females, 7 unknown) was included in this study. All participants completed the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20; Bagby et al., 1994), the Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS; Schutte et al., 1998); and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI; Davis, 1983). The results showed that alexithymia had significant negative correlation with empathy and emotional intelligence. These findings showed evidence alexithymia and emotional intelligence are independent; and these structures overlap and negatively related. The meaning and limitation of this study and the suggestion for the further study are discussed.
